5 Ways to Be a Winner…In Life and In the Show Ring

By Sally Long There’s a famous quote that says…”Sit with the winners, the conversation is different…” We love this quote and recently I have done some reflecting on what my conversations with true winners have looked like: 1.     Winners don’t make excuses. So things didn’t go your way and you had a bad show. It is so easy to find blame in the judge, the setup, the situation and anything else that could possibly help explain the disappointment.  However, all of those things are out of your control as a competitor. Winners let go of the things they cannot control …

Animals and Cold Weather

ShowBloom giving you that added edge.. The weather outside can get a bit frightful during the winter months and it can leave people wondering how animals survive in brutal sub-zero temperatures. The range of weather conditions throughout the regions of the U.S. can vary. What one showman thinks of as “cold” may be a tropical vacation to another – just ask an Iowa show family and a south Texas show family – the response will be completely different. Regardless of your own tolerance for the cold, good management practices make a big difference in caring for livestock during the cold weather …

Show Lessons from a Show Pig

By: Marisa Linton Showing pigs, while a great deal of fun, is also a lot of work. Beyond the typical feeding, brushing, and daily care of your pig, it takes a lot of dedication and perseverance to train your pig. Hours, in fact, of walking and turning, and pretending your mom is the judge. Exhausted yet? It certainly can be. Show pigs have a lot to learn if they are ever going to become champions. However, perhaps there are some lessons we can learn from our show pig.     1. Complaining doesn’t help when you must do something. It …

What do you need in order to survive the NAILE?

By: Katie Pieper   Sure, everybody’s needs are different, but this is your reminder checklist of staple items to be sure to pack in preparation for heading the Louisville.   · Coffee, 5-Hour energy, or for the health nuts, green tea. Regardless of how or what, make sure you have an endless supply of CAFFEINE! This is, first and foremost, extremely important! I could not survive 5 days in Louisville without it.     · A close second, be sure to get yourself a couple pair (because this is a good excuse to buy something new) of Twisted-X shoes. Whether …

Changing Seasons. Changing Nutritional Needs.

“In like a lion, out like a lamb”—the common adage for the month of March. This March, however, seemed to come in like a lion AND a lamb and is now providing some interesting twists and turns in the middle. It’s unusually hot and dry in the south, the east coast is experiencing their second winter, and the Midwest wakes up to a completely new climate every single day.   We are all dressing in layers and not sure what Mother Nature is going to bring our way the next day. So, what does that mean for our livestock?   …

The scoop on VFD

As the January 1, 2017 deadline for the implementation of the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) nears, veterinarians, producers and feed mills begin the transition to new compliance rules. Good news for ShowBloom customers, the all-natural supplement can still be fed to all species with no additional documentation needed.   In short, VFD will help regulate that all medications in feed and those that are water-soluble will require producers and feeder to have a signed form by a veterinarian familiar with their operation. Producers will work with their veterinarian to complete the form which includes: the producer’s name and address, the …
