The leaves are turning, the thermostat is dropping, and that means the start of what livestock kids have been patiently waiting all year for…FALL SHOWS! Over the next few weeks, over 10,000 exhibitors will be headed to the Kemper Arena to show at the American Royal. We know that for so many of you on Team Showbloom, these shows also double as a family vacation….so we came up with a few fun things that you have to do when you`re in Kansas City!
1) Watch the Steer Show!
The Kansas City steer show has become known as the place for the best steers in the country to end their show career fighting for a banner. There`s no experience quite like watching the championship selection from the front row, under the crown of the American Royal! Plus, you`ll have the chance to see some of the most influential people in the industry, all in one place at one time!
2) Get scared at the KC West Bottoms Haunted Houses
Luckily for those of you who love Halloween, there`s no better place to be around October 31st! Kansas City offers some of the scariest haunted houses around, and all only a short drive from the arena. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely a lot of fun!
3) Eat some authentic KC BBQ at Arthur Bryant`s
If you want a true taste of Kansas City, Arthur Bryant`s is a must. This quaint, home-style BBQ shop has been serving up favorites since 1930. Presidents, movie stars, and famous singers have raved about this famous little hideaway, and many have their pictures on the wall. If you`re looking for a great place to eat, this better be at the top of the list!
4) Watch the next breed-changer`s at the NJSA Gilt Show
If you’re a hog enthusiast, there is nothing better than watching a powerhouse female strut across the ring with a great showman at the whip! A relatively new event at the American Royal, this sanctioned show attracts exhibitors from across the country.
5) Shop around the Country Club Plaza
It`s never too early to narrow down that Christmas list, right? The Country Club Plaza offers something for the whole family, with stores like to Sephora, Northface, and Vineyard Vines. They also have popular restaurants so you can keep everyone fed after a long day of shopping!
6) Visit the Power and Light District
If you`re looking for something fun, day or night, the Power and Light is the place to be. This well-known area of Kansas City offers up-scale restaurants and nightlife, only minutes from many popular exhibitor hotels.
7) Take a stroll through the cattle barns
The American Royal cattle show is one of the largest and most historic events of the year for those in the industry. It never gets old seeing a promotional bull all decked out in his stall, or a heifer under the bright lights of a fitting chute. Don’t miss out on seeing some of the best cattle in the country!
8) Live out your pro-tour dreams…at TopGolf
Now we can`t all be pro-golfers, but we can all hit a few balls at the driving range! All ages, and skill levels, are welcome. Even better, you can enjoy food, drinks and blow off some of that added stress from the show!
9) See something different at the Kansas City Zoo
While most of your time may be spend looking after more traditional livestock species, it never hurts to see something more exotic. The Kansas City Zoo is one of the largest in the country, and animals from around the world can be seen roaming the grounds. Ever heard the term “cobra-necked” or “sound as a cat”…..well here you can find out where that came from!
10) Most importantly…have fun with your friends!
For a lot of us, the livestock industry is where we meet our best and closest friends. Even though we only get to see them a few times a year, we always take advantage of these moments. Take some time to watch the shows, see the city, and network with these one-of-a-kind people!
